Why there is nothing to decide

The appeal of baccarat is also the thing that confuses people new to it: after the bet, the player does nothing. Both sides receive 2 cards, and at most 1 more.

1. Bet is placed.
2. Two cards go to each side.
3. The printed rule decides any third card.
4. The side closer to 9 is paid. Whether a third card is drawn is set out in a rule table that the dealer follows mechanically, identically, every hand. There is no hitting, no standing, no splitting.

That makes it a pure wager on which of two fixed procedures produces the higher total. The full drawing rules are worth reading once, not because knowing them changes anything you can do, but because knowing them stops the third card from looking arbitrary.

The three bets, ranked

The grids exist because players want them, and because a table with them fills faster than a table without.

Reading a pattern into them costs nothing directly and costs a great deal indirectly: it is the mechanism by which a flat even-money bet turns into a progressively larger one, on the reasoning that a run is “due” to break. Nothing is due. The shoe has no memory.
