PH90 Baccarat Rules: What Triggers the Third Card

Baccarat has a reputation for being complicated, and the reputation comes entirely from one table of conditions that the player never has to apply. Everything else about the game is simpler than blackjack.

What the baccarat rules actually cover

The baccarat rules come down to 2 things: how a total is counted, and when a third card is dealt. A winning player bet pays 1x; a winning banker bet pays 1x less 5%. Neither involves a decision by the player, which is why the game is far simpler than its reputation.

Totals that wrap

The first thing to internalise is that only the last digit matters, so every total sits between 0 and 9.

1. Aces count 1; 2 through 9 count face value.
2. Tens and face cards count 0.
3. Totals wrap: 7 plus 8 is 5, not 15. Face cards and tens are worth nothing; a 7 and an 8 make 5, not 15. A two-card hand can total anything from 0 to 9 and a third card cannot push it “over”, because there is no over.

This is why baccarat has no bust, no doubling and no splitting. There is nothing to protect a hand from.

The player rule is one line

If neither side holds a natural 8 or 9, the player side draws on 0 through 5 and stands on 6 or 7. On an Evolution or Pragmatic table alike, the dealer has no discretion over it. That is the complete rule. No variation, no dealer discretion, no player choice.

The banker rule is the part people mean

The banker side stands on 7 and draws on 0, 1 or 2 regardless. Between 3 and 6 it looks at the rank of the player’s third card and decides from a printed grid: a banker 3 draws against almost everything, a banker 6 draws against very little, and 4 and 5 sit between them.

The logic underneath is straightforward even if the grid is not. The banker side acts with information the player side did not have, and the rule is calibrated to use it. That is worth a small edge, which is exactly why a winning banker bet pays even money less a commission — usually 5% — while the player bet pays even money flat.

How the house edge is explained covers why that arrangement leaves banker fractionally the better bet even after the commission is taken. It is one of the few places in a casino where the bet with a deduction attached is the one worth making.

What the rules do not give you

A ₱100 banker bet returns ₱195 on a win; a ₱100 player bet returns ₱200. Knowing the drawing table does not create a decision, because there is none to make — the dealer, on an Evolution or Pragmatic table alike, applies the same grid. What the rules do explain is why the dragon tiger variant is not simply a faster baccarat. Removing the third card removes the asymmetry, and removing the asymmetry removes the reason one side was better than the other. Two symmetrical even-money bets are a different product from a game built around a conditional second action, even though both are settled by comparing two totals.

Neither game belongs in the same category as either pusoy game, which is played against other people rather than against a printed rule.
