Where a game’s RTP sits at 96%, 4% is the house edge. Nothing is deducted at the end: that 4% is written into the odds of every outcome, so it operates continuously no matter which way a player happens to be running. By design rather than by accident, that is what leaves a commercial casino game with a negative expected return for the player.

A worked example

Put ₱5,000 of turnover against a 4% edge and the expected loss is ₱200, regardless of the sequence the wins and losses arrive in. Deposits are beside the point next to turnover: deposit ₱1,000, cycle it five times, and ₱5,000 of turnover has been generated with the same expected loss, on a fifth of the money.

The common misreading

You will sometimes hear a house edge described as something a system can beat. It is not. Probability on an individual outcome is untouched by any staking pattern, and that probability is where the edge sits. Expectation stays exactly where it was when stakes double after a loss; what moves is the distribution — wins grow, arrive less often, and drag a catastrophic tail behind them.

Neither a fee schedule nor the operator’s profit margin on a player is what the house edge describes. It is a long-run statistical property. Nor does it show a game to be unfair — disclosing an edge is how the product functions, and without one the operator would have nothing to run on.

Using it in practice

Over time no commercial casino game returns a positive expectation, and the edge explains it. Fixing the expected loss in advance and calling it the price of the entertainment describes it better than calling it an investment having a bad month.
