Betting Odds Explained: Six Worked Examples in Pesos

Odds are a price, and a price can be written more than one way. The same bet can read 2.50 in one format and 1.50 in another, and mixing the two up costs more than a bad pick. These betting odds explained examples use pesos and one rule: know whether the number includes your stake.
Betting odds explained: decimal next to Hong Kong
| Format | What the number means | PHP 100 at the same price |
|---|---|---|
| Decimal 2.50 | Total return per peso, stake included | Returns PHP 250 |
| Hong Kong 1.50 | Profit per peso, stake excluded | Wins PHP 150, returns PHP 250 |
The small detail: the two formats always differ by exactly 1, so a number that looks cheap in Hong Kong is the same bet as a number one higher in decimal.
Worked examples
Regulars do run the maths once before they stake, and they run it in the format on the slip.
- Decimal 1.90 on PHP 500: 500 x 1.90 = PHP 950 return, PHP 450 profit.
- Hong Kong 0.90 on PHP 500: 500 x 0.90 = PHP 450 profit, PHP 950 return.
- Decimal 3.20 on PHP 200: PHP 640 return, PHP 440 profit.
Examples one and two are the same bet in two formats, which is the point. A spread bet in NBA betting often sits near 1.90, and a three-way market in football betting shows prices such as 2.10, 3.30 and 3.60.
What the price says about chance
For the implied chance, put 1 over the decimal price. At 1.90 it is about 53 percent, and at 3.60 about 28 percent. Add the three football prices above and the implied chances come to more than 100 percent, because the operator’s margin sits inside the prices. New players often read each price alone and never notice that the total is over 100.
Combining bets
A combined bet multiplies prices:
- Take two legs priced at 1.80 and 2.00.
- Multiply them to get 3.60.
- PHP 100 returns PHP 360 only if both win.
Every leg must win, so one miss loses the whole stake. The return grows quickly and the chance of winning shrinks faster than the price suggests.
Before you stake
- Find the odds format label on the slip.
- Multiply the stake by the price.
- Compare the implied chance with your own view.
Odds do not tell you which operator is licensed or whether you may play. The sports betting section covers the 21 age rule and the PAGCOR checks. Open an account or return to the login to see which format the slip uses, then run the sum before you confirm.
How to Get Started
-
Note which format the slip uses
Decimal and Hong Kong prices look alike but differ by exactly 1. Check the format label before you read any number.
-
Multiply stake by the price
In decimal, stake times price is the return. In Hong Kong, stake times price is only the profit, with the stake coming back on top.
-
Check the implied chance
Work out 1 ÷ the decimal price. If the result is higher than the chance you believe, the price is poor.
